Dr. Karen Zhang
Dr. Karen Zhang is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) to provide services to adults, with competencies in clinical, health, and rehabilitation psychology.
Training/Work Experience: Dr. Zhang completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Western Ontario, and her pre-doctoral residency at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, specializing in anxiety and behavioural medicine. Her Post-doctoral Fellowship at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute focused on advancing research and clinical care for patients with cardiovascular conditions. In addition to working at MindFit, Dr. Zhang is a psychologist at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, and part-time Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster. She is active in patient care, research, supervision, academic teaching, community outreach, and program development and evaluation.
Presenting Concerns: Dr. Zhang works with adults with a variety of concerns including:
- Coping with cancer and/or other medical conditions
- Health worries
- Anxiety, panic, OCD and phobias
- Low mood/depression
- Grief/loss
- Existential concerns
- Relationship stressors
- Work stressors
- Adjustment to life stressors
- Sleep/insomnia
Approach: Dr. Zhang uses a client-centred approach that balances evidence-based practice with compassion and warmth. She incorporates strategies from cognitive-behaviour therapy, motivational interviewing, emotion-focused skills, and acceptance-commitment therapy to help clients achieve their goals.
Outside of MindFit: Dr. Zhang enjoys being in nature, seeking out the arts, running, and exploring new places. She is learning how to balance these things with a busy toddler.
